Folklore exhibition

The second part of the project tried to improve the texts in the folklore room of the museum, which exhibits clothes and jewels showing parts of the cultural heritage from the last few hundreds of years.

The new signs (in English, but the Arabic translation already exists and will be added) try to explain the exhibits in more detail and put them in their cultural context (fig. 7-8). The jewels have symbolic meanings, and the styles of the clothes often stand for certain regions. The texts were written by Anne Drewsen.

Examples of object descriptions in the showcases

Collection of golden Ottoman coins used as earrings and other jewellery by Bedouins in the Madaba area in the early 20th century. Coins were popular because their silver or gold content was guaranteed.

Bracelets of silver used by both Bedouin and village women, usually in pairs (one on each arm). Jewellery is the personal wealth of a woman in the shape of gifts given to her at her wedding or inherited. She literally wore her wealth.
